The Tradition

What Is Balochi Embroidery?

Balochi embroidery is a centuries-old hand-needlework tradition from Balochistan, Pakistan. Each piece is stitched entirely by hand, using silk or cotton thread on cotton, lawn, or chiffon fabric, with no machine assistance at any stage. Patterns are passed down through generations of women artisans and often reflect the wearer's tribe, region, or family identity.

Several named embroidery styles fall under the Balochi tradition, each with distinct stitch patterns and regional origin:

Shoolok

A fine running-stitch technique known for lightweight, intricate borders, commonly used on kurtas and dupattas.

Quetta Embroidery

Bold, dense thread-work associated with artisans from the Quetta region, often featuring geometric and floral motifs.

Mausam Embroidery

A seasonal embroidery style using vibrant, multi-color thread combinations, popular for festive wear.

Makki Tanka

A tightly packed thread technique that creates a textured, raised embroidery effect, typically seen on kurtas.

Did You Know

A single hand-embroidered Balochi dress can take anywhere from 3 weeks to several months to complete, depending on the density and complexity of the threadwork — which is why no two pieces are ever identical.

Frequently Asked Questions About Balochi Embroidery

What is Balochi embroidery?

Balochi embroidery is a traditional hand-embroidery technique from Balochistan, Pakistan, where artisans stitch intricate patterns onto fabric entirely by hand using silk or cotton thread, without any machine work.

How long does it take to make a handmade Balochi dress?

Depending on the embroidery style and density of threadwork, a single handmade Balochi dress can take anywhere from 3 weeks to several months to complete.

What is the difference between Shoolok and Quetta embroidery?

Shoolok is a fine running-stitch technique known for delicate, lightweight borders, while Quetta embroidery features bolder, denser thread-work with geometric and floral motifs associated with the Quetta region.

How do I wash and care for hand-embroidered Balochi fabric?

Hand-embroidered Balochi garments should be gently hand-washed in cold water, dried in shade (not direct sunlight), and ironed on the reverse side to protect the threadwork.

Do you ship Balochi dresses internationally?

Yes, we deliver Balochi embroidery dresses across Pakistan and internationally, including the UAE, Oman, Saudi Arabia, UK, and USA.

How can I tell if a Balochi embroidery dress is handmade rather than machine-made?

Handmade Balochi embroidery typically shows slight natural variation in stitch spacing and thread tension, a textured (slightly raised) feel to the touch, and visible thread knots on the reverse side — machine embroidery is more uniform and flat by comparison.

What is the price range for an authentic Balochi dress?

Prices vary based on fabric, embroidery style, and design complexity, typically ranging from around Rs. 8,000 for simpler kurtas to Rs. 40,000+ for heavily hand-embroidered bridal-style pieces.
